The School-Year Shuffle and Your Stress Levels
When the school year kicks in, life can feel like a sprint that never stops. Between work meetings, school drop-offs, after-school activities, and household to-dos, your brain is juggling a thousand details. And while your mind is racing, your body is often the one paying the price.
Neck tension. Achy shoulders. A constant tightness in your chest. That nagging fatigue that just doesn’t seem to lift.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many of my Chicago patients, especially busy working moms, come to me feeling physically and emotionally drained once the school year starts. The good news? There are practical, science-backed ways to reset your stress response without overhauling your entire schedule.
I want to share some of the mind-body techniques I use in my concierge women’s counseling and physical therapy sessions so you can start feeling more grounded, even on your busiest days.
How Stress Shows Up in the Body
We often think of stress as “just mental,” but your body experiences it as a full-body event. Here’s how it tends to appear:
Physical Symptoms
- Tightness in your neck, jaw, or shoulders
- Frequent headaches
- Digestive changes
- Fatigue that isn’t fixed by sleep
- Trouble relaxing muscles, even at rest
Emotional and Mental Impacts
- Short temper or irritability
- Feeling overwhelmed or “stuck in overdrive”
- Difficulty concentrating
- Trouble falling or staying asleep
- Heightened anxiety or worry
When these signs go unchecked, they can snowball into chronic pain, recurring tension, or emotional burnout. The trick is to address stress before it becomes your body’s default setting.
The Mind-Body Techniques I Recommend Most
As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Women’s Counselor, and Chiropractic Physician, my approach is integrative and hands-on. I focus on tools that calm your nervous system, release stored tension, and reconnect you with your body’s natural rhythms.
1. Breathwork for Instant Calm
You’ve probably heard “take a deep breath” before, but the way you breathe matters. When stress spikes, our breathing often becomes shallow, which tells the body it’s in danger. This fuels the fight-or-flight response.
Try my 2-Minute Reset Routine:
- Sit comfortably with your feet on the floor.
- Place one hand on your chest, the other on your belly.
- Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4, letting your belly rise under your hand.
- Hold for 1–2 counts.
- Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of 6, feeling your shoulders drop.
- Repeat for 2 minutes.
This simple pattern helps signal your body that it’s safe, shifting you toward a calmer, more balanced state.
2. Somatic Awareness Practices
Somatic practices teach you to notice where stress “lives” in your body and how to release it. Many of my patients don’t realize they’re clenching their jaw, rounding their shoulders, or holding their breath until we bring awareness to it.
A quick daily check-in can make a difference:
- Scan from head to toe and notice any tension.
- Gently stretch or shake out those areas.
- Pair it with a few deep breaths to help your muscles let go.
These small moments of awareness can prevent tension from becoming chronic pain.
3. Gentle Movement to Discharge Stress
Movement is medicine for stress, but it doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. I often guide my patients through gentle mobility exercises like shoulder rolls, neck stretches, and spinal twists that can be done in minutes between tasks.
Even a 60-second movement break can help:
- Stand up from your desk.
- Roll your shoulders backward 5 times.
- Turn your head side to side slowly, breathing evenly.
- Reach your arms overhead, then lower them slowly.
The goal isn’t a workout, it’s a reset.
Integrating Stress Relief into Your Day
It’s one thing to know what helps, and another to actually fit it in. That’s why I help my concierge patients create micro-practices — short, doable actions that fit right into their existing routines.
Here are a few ways to start:
Between Meetings or Tasks
- Two minutes of breathing before your next Zoom call
- A quick shoulder stretch after sending a big email
During School Pickups or Drop-offs
- Park a little farther away and take a short mindful walk
- Use your time in the pickup line for breathwork instead of scrolling your phone
Evening Wind-Down
- Five minutes of gentle stretching before bed
- A gratitude journal entry to shift your focus away from the day’s stressors
How Concierge Counseling Fits In
For many Chicago moms, the biggest barrier to self-care is logistics. You want to feel better, but you can’t add “commute to therapy” to your already full schedule.
That’s where in-home women’s counseling and mind-body care changes the game.
When I come to you, we can:
- Work through emotional stress in real time, in your own safe space
- Blend conversation with breathwork, gentle movement, or somatic release techniques
- Create a personalized stress relief plan that fits your life, not the other way around
Because I combine counseling with physical therapy and chiropractic training, you get a truly whole-person approach. We’re not just talking about stress, we’re releasing it from your body while supporting your emotional health.
